At the top level, a single twist in the opening can mean the difference between victory and defeat. In today’s Opening Update, GM Perelshteyn breaks down a key encounter from the FIDE World Cup, Donchenko-Liem.

Having drawn the first game with Black, Donchenko could assure match victory with a win with the White pieces. He did just that using a tricky idea in the Nimzo-Indian that caught Liem unprepared. Liem responded inaccurately, got a bad position, and never recovered.

GM Perelshteyn breaks down not only the key idea used by Donchenko, but many other concepts in the Nimzo-Indian. Required viewing for anyone who plays the Nimzo with either color.
