Even when I think I understand the material I find I have to play a game like this one and analyze it afterward before all the nuance will really stick. But then when reviewing lines in the future I’ll remember the game and the ideas.

I prefer to study openings from books, there are more explanations, deeper. Then I build my pgns following the books and analyzing the model games. I think Grandmaster Repertoire from Quality Chess is excellent.

Yep, totally agree. I love Sielecki's S+S Caro-Kann because after the line ends, he shows you your middlegame plans.
